Besides this consideration, the magistrate who took the depositions reported that there was little doubt in his mind from the evidence given that intimidation had been used at least to procure the attendance of some witnesses (for the prosecution), if not to prevent that of others (for the defence), and that under the circumstances the prisoner was much prejudiced in his defence.
